Struggle and faith intertwine in the story of Saint Mark’s Orthodox Church. This parish emerged from a disagreement. It was a dispute between Dean Hart of St. John’s Cathedral and Bishop Spalding of the Diocese of Colorado.

The year was 1875. Bishop Spalding became the founder and pastor of this new parish.

The conflict centered on how the diocese should grow. Dean Hart believed growth should stem from the cathedral. Bishop Spalding felt it should come from the Bishop’s actions. Money fueled their bitter battle. Despite this, they continued amicably for a decade. It was as if the strife about Saint Mark’s Orthodox Church never occurred. Common worship in the Book of Common Prayer united them.
