“A hallowed ground this is” whispered a visitor. Welcome to Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church. Right here in the heart of Manhattan stands a living testament to faith and perseverance. This isn’t just any church. Saint Mark’s boasts a history stretching back to the mid-17th century. It’s New York City’s oldest site of continuous religious practice.

Imagine Petrus Stuyvesant the Director-General of New Netherland. In 1651 he purchased land for a farm. By 1660 a family chapel stood on this very spot. Stuyvesant himself was buried in a vault beneath that chapel. His great-grandson later sold the property to the Episcopal Church for a mere dollar. Can you believe it?

The cornerstone of the current Saint Mark’s Church was laid in 1795. Architect John McComb Jr. designed the Georgian style building. It was consecrated on May 9 1799. Alexander Hamilton even lent his legal expertise to help establish Saint Mark’s as the first Episcopal parish independent of Trinity Church. That’s a fascinating detail many miss.

Over the centuries Saint Mark’s transformed. A Greek Revival steeple was added in 1828. Later renovations included Egyptian Revival elements. A fire in 1978 nearly destroyed the church. However the community rallied to rebuild Saint Mark’s. The restoration was completed in 1986.

Saint Mark’s wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a hub for art and culture. The Poetry Project and Danspace Project found homes within its walls. Iconic figures like Patti Smith and Kahlil Gibran graced its stage. Isadora Duncan even danced here.

Even today Saint Mark’s continues to embrace its artistic legacy. It hosts modern art events. It remains a vibrant part of the East Village community. The church grounds still hold the remains of notable New Yorkers. Among them is Peter Stuyvesant himself. Many others including mayors and politicians are buried here.
