“A church built on a farm? Imagine that!” St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, right here in the East Village, has a history as unique as its name. This isn’t just any church. It’s New York City’s oldest site of continuous religious practice, a testament to centuries of faith and community. The story begins in 1651 when Petrus Stuyvesant, the Director-General of New Netherland, bought this land. He established a “bouwerij,” a Dutch word meaning farm, and built a small family chapel by 1660. When Stuyvesant died in 1672, he was buried beneath his chapel, a tradition that ties the very ground we stand on to the city’s earliest days. The original chapel isn’t what we see today. In 1793, Stuyvesant’s great-grandson sold the chapel to the Episcopal Church for a single dollar. The current St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery building was completed in 1799, designed by John McComb Jr., the same architect who designed New York City Hall. Alexander Hamilton himself helped incorporate St. Mark’s as the first Episcopal parish independent of Trinity Church. The church flourished, becoming home to prominent families and individuals. The 19th century saw St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery undergo several transformations. The Greek Revival steeple, designed by Martin Euclid Thompson and Ithiel Town, was added in 1828. The Parish Hall was built in 1835. In 1836, the sanctuary was renovated, replacing the original square pillars with slender Egyptian Revival ones. An Italianate cast-iron portico was added in 1856. The blend of architectural styles reflects the evolving tastes and history of the church and the city. The church’s rich history isn’t just about architecture and famous names. It’s about community, art, and resilience. In 1978, a devastating fire nearly destroyed St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery. But the community rallied, raising funds and dedicating years to its restoration. The church was rededicated in 1983, a symbol of the enduring spirit of this place. Today, St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery remains a vibrant center for worship, art, and community events. It stands as a living reminder of New York City’s long and layered past, from its Dutch roots to its bustling present.
