Here at 1600 South Robertson Boulevard stands a testament to faith. This is Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church. It stands as one of the oldest Coptic parishes in the United States.
Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church’s story began in the late 1960s. Coptic families started settling in Los Angeles. The climate reminded them of Egypt. More families followed.
In 1969 Pope Cyril VI sent Father Bishoy Kamel to serve this growing community. By 1970 Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church was officially incorporated. It became the second Coptic parish in the United States. About 200 families were members at the time.
Father Bishoy Kamel was a very important person in the church. He helped establish many parishes and buildings. These were not only in Egypt but also in the United States. He also built churches in Europe and Australia. Many considered him a modern-day saint.
Initially, the congregation worshiped in a Syriac Orthodox building. Later, they bought the current building. It had previously belonged to the Russian Orthodox Church.
In 1995, the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Los Angeles was founded. It also included Southern California and Hawaii. Pope Shenouda III made Serapion Bishop of the diocese. Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church was part of this diocese.
Today, Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church serves around 650 Coptic families. Many others belong to different congregations throughout California.
Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church is part of a large and active diocese. The Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Los Angeles has a rich history. It has grown significantly since its establishment.
After 1965 more Copts came to the United States. They sought religious freedom and better opportunities. Southern California’s climate was a draw. The Coptic population grew quickly.
Early on, visiting clergy held liturgies once a year. Some Copts attended other Orthodox churches. They also met for Bible study in homes.
In 1973, Father Antonious Henein was ordained. He served specifically in Los Angeles. In 1974, a second church was purchased. It was named Holy Virgin Mary Coptic Orthodox Church.
Pope Shenouda III visited the region in 1977. He saw the need for more services. By 1995, Southern California had 15 churches and 19 priests.
That year, Pope Shenouda III announced the establishment of a bishopric. The congregation petitioned for Bishop Serapion. He had assisted the Pope during his visits. On November 14, 1995, Bishop Serapion was appointed. He became the bishop of Los Angeles, Southern California, and Hawaii.
In 2016, Pope Tawadros II elevated Bishop Serapion to Metropolitan. He also appointed Bishop Abraham and Bishop Kyrillos to assist him. In 2019, Bishop Suriel also joined to help the diocese.
The diocese is divided into five regions. These are Hawaii, Eastern, Western, Northern, and Southern California.
The Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Los Angeles includes several affiliated organizations. These include St. Athanasius and St. Cyril Theological School. There is also Santa Verena Charity. Also included are Saint Anthony Monastery and Saint Paul Brotherhood.
