Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Houston, Texas, stands the Saint Mark Baptist Church. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. Let’s journey back to 1894, to the bustling Second Ward. A group of devout individuals, led by Reverend I.B. Burch, felt a spiritual calling. They branched out from Mount Zion Baptist Church. Their mission was to establish a new haven of worship. This new congregation, initially known as “Missionary Baptist Church,” was brimming with purpose. One of its members, Sister Dilcy Catchings, bestowed upon it the name “Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church”. Initially, they held services in a Third Ward African Methodist Church building. Their faith fueled their progress, both in numbers and in resources. This allowed them to acquire land and eventually erect their own building. The Saint Mark Baptist Church thrived. However, disaster struck in 1900. A devastating storm completely destroyed their cherished edifice. Undeterred, the resilient members rallied together. They rebuilt their house of worship, stronger and more determined than before. Saint Mark Baptist Church continued to flourish under a series of dedicated pastors. Reverends E. Black, William Treadville, and Adam Thompson guided the congregation through the early 1900s. In 1940, Reverend W.H. Snow took the helm, serving for 12 years. He also held the esteemed position of Moderator of the South Texas District Association. The Saint Mark Baptist Church faced another turning point in 1952. With a dwindling population in Second Ward and the rise of industrial growth, relocation became necessary. The church moved from the I.G.N. Track to its present location at 5306 Lyons Avenue. This move marked a new chapter in Saint Mark’s history. Under the leadership of Reverend Joseph Brown, Sr., who was called in 1950, the church embarked on this significant transition. The Saint Mark Baptist Church has continued its journey of faith and service, adapting to the changing times while holding steadfast to its core values. Under Pastor James Glynn’s guidance, the church underwent significant renovations in 2010. The adjoining property was acquired, paving the way for future expansion and the construction of an education building. Further demonstrating their commitment to reaching a wider community, Pastor Glynn introduced a Saturday evening service. This initiative has been a welcoming addition for members unable to attend traditional Sunday services. Through trials and triumphs, the Saint Mark Baptist Church has remained a cornerstone of faith in Houston.
