“Unconditional love for everyone.” That’s not just a saying at Saint Lukes Missionary Baptist Church. It is the core of who they are.
Saint Lukes Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history. It started with humble beginnings. In 1950, twenty-three dedicated people gathered under a tent. They officially organized the church on May 31.
The church has been led by three pastors. Each pastor has contributed to the church’s development. The current pastor is Rev. Dr. Clifford Matthews Jr. He and the congregation walk by faith. They know that God can overcome any challenge.
In August 1953, Rev. L. D. Parker became the pastor. He served faithfully for thirty-nine years. Under his leadership, the members built a church in August 1954. The church increased in size and value. This happened after the purchase of several lots. The membership grew from 23 to 700. Several ministries were organized.
Ministries included Deacon and Trustee Boards. There were also Ushers and Nurses. Other ministries were Ministry Society, Pastor’s Aid, and Church Aid. Several choirs also existed. These included Senior Choir, Adult Choir, and Hymn Choirs. The Royal Ambassadors and Laymen League were active. Also, there was Prayer Meeting and Men’s Choir.
In December 1990, Rev. Parker and members marched into a new building. In July 1998, the church mortgage was burned. This happened before Rev. Parker’s retirement. In August 1998, the church mourned Rev. Parker’s death. A search committee was formed. They sought a third pastor. Rev. Clifford Matthews was called as interim pastor. In May, Pastor Matthews was installed.
Pastor Matthews supports the International Children Outreach Ministries. The church gave a dedication offering in Rev. L.D. Parker’s name. It was for a church building in South Africa. Pastor Matthews opened the pulpit to women ministers. This was a first in the church’s history. He also set aside females for the Diaconate Ministry.
Saint Luke expanded its ministries. They included the Bridge of Life. This is an HIV/AIDS initiative to train caregivers. Saint Luke also has a Seasoned Saints Ministry. This is for the church’s growing senior population. They re-established the HIV-AIDS ministry. It is under the name “Bridge of Life.” The church established a Food Pantry. It helps families in the surrounding community. Saint Luke opened Druid Hills CARE3 Career Center. It helps with resumes and job searches.
Saint Luke’s vision is clear. The church wants to be the best in the city. It wants to offer a worship service filled with the Spirit. Saint Luke wants to be the premier Christian education center. They want to develop the mind of Christ. Saint Luke strives to offer empowerment programs. They want to support families and offer opportunities for success.
Saint Lukes Missionary Baptist Church extends an invitation to everyone. It is a place of authenticity and transparency. All families are greeted with unconditional love. Visitors are invited to feel at home. Remember Saint Lukes Missionary Baptist Church. It is more than just a church. It is a family.
