You’ll find St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on the corner of Grand Avenue and Carroll Street. In the heart of San Antonio, it’s a beacon of faith and community. The church was organized in 1921, and the first service was held at the YMCA. 39 charter members came together with a vision for a dedicated space, with beautiful brick walls and a stunning stained-glass window where light streams through, illuminating the altar. They secured the corner plot on Grand and Carroll in 1922. Imagine the bustling city of San Antonio in the early 20th century. The first church, completed in 1927, was a red brick structure that served the community for decades. But as San Antonio grew, so did the church congregation.
By the early 1960s, it was clear the church needed a new, more spacious structure to accommodate the growing community. In August 1965, the final service was held in the original red brick church. Construction began on the new building, and in December 1966, a magnificent contemporary design, which stands today, was dedicated. It’s a testament to the spirit of adaptation and growth. The church has seen more than a century of change and evolution, but its commitment to faith, service, and community remains unwavering. The church continues to be a symbol of hope and strength for the people of San Antonio. So step inside and experience the history of St. Luke’s, one of the city’s most beloved landmarks.
