Amidst the vibrant hustle of Peachtree Street, stands Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church. A silent sentinel witnessing Atlanta’s transformation through the ages. Saint Luke’s journey began not on this bustling avenue, but amidst the chaos of the Civil War. In 1864, as shells rained down upon the city, Dr. Charles Todd Quintard, a chaplain for the Confederate Army, saw a need. A need for spiritual solace amidst the storm. He founded Saint Luke’s, a simple wooden structure, offering refuge to those displaced by war. This first incarnation of Saint Luke’s, consecrated by Bishop Stephen Elliott, stood at Broad and Walton Streets. Its existence, however, was short-lived. Just four months later, Union shelling severely damaged the building. It was ultimately destroyed during the burning of Atlanta. But the spirit of Saint Luke’s, like the city itself, was not easily extinguished. The parish was reborn in 1870, initially as St. Stephen’s. Later, in 1872, it reclaimed its original name: Saint Luke’s. The church found a new home at Spring and Walton Streets. Financial difficulties plagued the young parish. In 1880, it became the cathedral for Bishop Beckwith, a move intended to bolster its stability. A new cathedral was constructed at Pryor and Houston Streets. This too was a temporary home. As Atlanta grew, so did Saint Luke’s congregation, shifting northward. In 1904, the church made a bold decision. It sold its Pryor Street building and acquired land on Peachtree Street. This would be its final move, its true home. The current Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, a magnificent Gothic structure, was consecrated in 1906. Designed by parishioner and renowned architect P. Thornton Marye, the man behind Atlanta landmarks like the Fox Theatre, the church stands as a testament to resilience and faith. Over the decades, Saint Luke’s has not only witnessed Atlanta’s history but has actively participated in shaping it. The vibrant stained-glass windows, installed over a period of sixty years, depict the life of Christ, interwoven with Old Testament stories. The awe-inspiring mural above the altar, “Christ as the Good Shepherd,” painted by Edwin Howland Blashfield, adds another layer of artistic richness to the sanctuary. The church bells, originally cast in 1924 and brought from St Helen’s Church in England, ring out across Peachtree Street, a call to worship and a reminder of the enduring spirit of Saint Luke’s. From its humble beginnings as a Civil War refuge to its current grandeur on Peachtree Street, Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church remains a beacon of faith, resilience, and service in the heart of Atlanta.
