Gazing at Saint Laurence Roman Catholic Church, one can almost hear the echoes of Polish hymns and the murmur of fervent prayers. Saint Laurence Roman Catholic Church stands as a testament to the unwavering faith and resilience of Philadelphia’s Polish community. This church, nestled in the heart of Fishtown, was more than just a place of worship. It was a beacon of hope, a cultural anchor, and a symbol of community for generations of Polish immigrants. Established in 1882, Saint Laurence was the oldest Polish Roman Catholic Church in Philadelphia. Its story begins with a small group of devoted families, just fifty strong, and a mere $31.50 in their treasury. Yet, their faith was immeasurable. They petitioned Archbishop James F. Wood for a church of their own, and their dream materialized in the form of a modest basement chapel on Berks and Memphis Streets. The church’s namesake, St. Lawrence, a deacon martyred under the Roman Emperor Valerian, became their patron saint. The church’s humble beginnings did not hinder its growth. In 1890, the Felician Sisters, a Polish order of nuns, began educating neighborhood children in the basement chapel. The arrival of Father Adalbert Malusecki marked a significant turning point. He spearheaded the construction of the upper chapel, designed by architect Edwin Forrest Durang. German craftsmen meticulously adorned the sanctuary with an ornate wooden altar, pulpit, statues, and exquisite stained-glass windows, transforming it into a place of breathtaking beauty. Later, in 1912, Father Gabriel Kraus further enhanced the sanctuary with oil paintings depicting the life of Christ and the saints. As the congregation grew, the church expanded. Homes adjacent to the church were acquired and demolished to make way for a rectory. More properties were purchased to provide additional classrooms and a convent for the Felician Sisters. The church continued to flourish. A new school building was erected in 1923, capable of accommodating 350 students. The installation of an elaborate pipe organ in 1919 added another dimension to the church’s grandeur. Even during the challenging times of the Great Depression, the church’s spirit remained unyielding. Fundraising efforts helped alleviate financial burdens, allowing the church to continue serving its community. In the 1950s and 1960s, further improvements were made, including new heating systems in the school and rectory. A new convent was built for the Felician Sisters. The church even established a Boy Scouts troop and a Catholic Ladies Guild. Sadly, in 2014, Saint Laurence Church closed its doors due to severe structural issues. However, the spirit of Saint Laurence and the legacy of the Polish community it served continues to live on in the hearts of those who once called it home.
