Founded in June 1923 Saint Kevins Catholic Church stands proudly in Los Angeles. It wasn’t always so grand. Initially part of St Brendan’s and St Basil’s it carved its own identity. The church’s striking concrete structure boasts simplified Romanesque architecture. Imagine the artisans shaping its curves and angles. The first pastor Father Joseph Loughran laid the groundwork. He was followed by Father Robert Lucey who later became a bishop. Father Thomas Noonan continued the legacy. He oversaw the construction of the rectory. Sadly he passed away in 1954 before the new church’s completion. His successor Father James Deenihan saw the church blessed by Cardinal Timothy Manning. This pivotal moment occurred on January 8 1956. A significant milestone in the church’s history.
The High Altar’s consecration was another special event. It happened on March 9 1957. Bishop Alden Bell presided. The altar a masterpiece of dark brown and white marble was a product of Italian craftsmanship. Intricate carvings and rich colors adorn it. The detail is breathtaking. Inocenzo Daraio the artist responsible for its decorative elements created true beauty.
Today Saint Kevins Catholic Church thrives. It’s a vibrant community a welcoming space. It serves the spiritual needs of its parishioners. The church continues to uphold its rich history. It welcomes visitors and newcomers alike. It offers Mass in English and Spanish. It also holds various devotions and confessionals.
