Founded on Palm Sunday March 22 1970 Saint Joseph’s Anglican Church began humbly in Co-op City Bronx. Weekly services were held in members’ homes. Father David Hogan Father Robert Willing and Father James Wattley led these early gatherings. Imagine the intimate atmosphere the shared faith. A small but devoted community.
In June 1971 Bishop Donegan granted mission status. Father Wattley became Chaplain to the Episcopal Community of Co-op City. Services moved to the Dreiser Loop Community Center. Sunday school flourished alongside worship. The church was more than a building it was a growing family.
On April 7 1972 a momentous decision was made. The Vestry voted to name the church Saint Joseph’s. A fitting tribute to Jesus’ foster father a master carpenter. Co-op City was under construction. Saint Joseph the patron saint of builders was an appropriate choice. A symbolic connection between faith and the physical creation of community.
February 1 1977 marked another milestone. Father Robert Gendreau the first full-time priest arrived. Services moved to 171 Dreiser Loop. Parish status followed in 1979. Gendreau’s leadership laid the foundation for Saint Joseph’s future growth. His legacy continues to influence the church’s identity.
In 1988 the church found its permanent home at 155 Dreiser Loop. Father Allan Newman served as Priest-in-Charge. Numerous priests followed each contributing to the vibrant spiritual life. Father Williamson Taylor’s thirteen-year ministry from 2002 significantly impacted Saint Joseph’s growth. The congregation expanded spiritually socially and financially.
Today Saint Joseph’s Anglican Church stands as a testament to enduring faith community and perseverance. Its journey from humble beginnings to a thriving parish is a story of dedication resilience and the unwavering spirit of its members. It is a place where the spirit of Saint Joseph lives on.
