Gazing up at Saint Josephat’s Church, one might initially mistake it for another Polish church. But this Saint Josephat’s has a unique story. This story begins in 1898 in Manayunk, a neighborhood bustling with Polish immigrants seeking work. These newcomers, though finding jobs in the steel, wool, and paper mills, yearned for a spiritual home. They longed to pray and sing in their native tongue. The nearest Polish church was miles away in Fishtown, making travel difficult. Their pleas for a local church reached Archbishop Ryan. In 1898, he dispatched Reverend Mieczyslaus Kopytkiewicz to organize a parish. Initial services were held at St. John’s Lower Church, marking the humble beginnings of Saint Josephat’s Roman Catholic Church. The congregation quickly purchased the old Fourth Reformed Presbyterian Church building at Silverwood and Cotton streets, transforming it into their sacred space. A double home on Grape Street became the rectory and later a convent. Over the decades, Saint Josephat’s Church thrived. The parish school expanded, a new rectory was built, and in 1958, a brand new church was dedicated. The church stood as a testament to the Polish community’s devotion. Despite a rich history spanning over a century, Saint Josephat’s merged with St. John the Baptist and St. Mary of the Assumption in 2012. Although no longer a standalone parish, Saint Josephat’s Church remains a worship site, a quiet echo of a vibrant past. It serves as a reminder of the immigrants who built it, their faith, and their enduring legacy in Manayunk.
