In 1848 German refugees seeking refuge from turmoil found solace in Guttenberg. They formed a small Catholic community. Their first Mass was held in Jane Minnix’s home. This humble beginning marked the genesis of Saint Joseph of the Palisades Church.

Saint Joseph of the Palisades Church’s story is one of growth and resilience. As the community expanded Masses were celebrated in the town hall and schoolhouse. By 1863 a baptismal register appeared. This signified the official start of parochial work. The dream of a permanent church structure took shape. It was estimated to cost $10000 a significant sum at the time.

The 1880s saw the parish flourish. A parochial school and convent were built. The Sisters of St Francis from Peekskill NY educated local children. Passionist Fathers established Holy Family school in nearby Union Hill. A small school is believed to have been established in North Bergen at the foot of Hudson County Park.

By the early 1900s West New York’s growing population necessitated relocation. In 1902 land was purchased from former Guttenberg Mayor Herman Walker. The new location was on Palisade Avenue. This was between 64th and 65th Streets. Under Reverend William Keyes a larger school was built across the street. By 1929 the school boasted 1200 pupils. Math reading writing religion music and theater were taught. Later athletic facilities high school classes and a library were added.

The Astor Theater was transformed into the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel in 1953. Since the 1960s Saint Joseph of the Palisades Church welcomed many Latin American Catholics. This led to the creation of the Saint Joseph’s Spanish Center in 1962. Today the parish is 75% Hispanic. Masses are celebrated in both English and Spanish. The church offers aid with housing employment and legal matters.

A devastating fire in 1982 damaged the church. The mural of the crucifixion was affected. Major repairs were undertaken. The church reopened in 1984. Recent achievements include debt elimination renovations and the establishment of a scholarship fund. Saint Joseph of the Palisades Church continues to serve its community. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of its people.
