Did you ever hear of a school starting with just 25 students? Saint Joseph Hill Academy, perched atop a hill overlooking the Manhattan skyline, did just that. In March 1919, the Daughters of Divine Charity purchased the 14-acre estate of William Knauth, laying the groundwork for Saint Joseph Hill Academy. That fall, they started tutoring just 25 children. This small group sparked the flame that grew into the thriving institution we see today. Originally, Saint Joseph Hill Academy served as both a day school and a boarding school. The first dedicated elementary school building opened in 1925. The high school followed in 1930, graduating its first class of six young women in 1934. Over the years, Saint Joseph Hill Academy expanded. A new elementary school building was dedicated in 1953. A high school wing was added in 1958. A pre-kindergarten program was launched in 1991. Even in the new millennium, growth continued. A new gymnasium, classrooms, and a distance-learning lab were added between 1999 and 2001. In 2009, Madonna Hall, a dedicated art studio, opened its doors. Today, Saint Joseph Hill Academy stands as a testament to the vision of the Daughters of Divine Charity. It educates approximately 1,000 students from pre-K through 12th grade. The high school remains all-girls, while the elementary school is co-ed. The school prides itself on its rigorous academics, rooted in Catholic values and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As you stand here, imagine those first 25 students, climbing this hill to learn and grow. Their legacy continues in the halls of Saint Joseph Hill Academy, a beacon of knowledge and faith on Staten Island.
