Founded in 1883, this church wasn’t always the grand structure you see before you. It began humbly, in an abandoned store, serving a small group of families seeking spiritual solace. The first pastor, Father Percy Alfred Phillips, nurtured the fledgling congregation for three years. His successor, Father Thomas Malone, envisioned a more permanent home for the growing parish. In 1888, construction began on the church we stand before today. Interestingly, the building was designed with a dual purpose. The ground floor served as a parish school, while the upper floor housed the worship space. Saint Joseph Catholic Church is historically significant for its architecture, a prime example of the institutional style prevalent in Denver during the late 19th century. Even more remarkable are the stained-glass windows. They are American-made, a rarity at a time when most churches imported their windows from Europe. Father Malone was found to have embezzled a substantial sum of money, leading to the mass excommunication of over 100 parishioners. Coincidentally, a house across the street, known as the Samsonite house, was built for the same amount as the embezzled funds, in the name of Father Malone’s mother. This house was quickly sold before an investigation could take place. The church’s history is also intertwined with the growth of the Baker neighborhood. As the area flourished, so did the congregation, leading to expansions and renovations over the years.
