Here at Saint Joseph Catholic Church a story of faith rises from ashes. This church has served Los Angeles for many years. It stands as a testament to community.

Let’s step back in time. We will explore Saint Joseph Catholic Church’s fascinating past. The church’s origins trace back to German-speaking immigrants. They sought a spiritual home in this growing city.

Groundbreaking occurred in 1901. Construction concluded on the Feast Day of Saint Joseph in 1903. German Catholic monks and craftsmen designed its features. They designed the frescoes and furnishings. They designed the exterior. Many of these men had fled Germany. They escaped Kaiser Wilhelm I’s rule. They sought refuge from Otto von Bismarck’s policies.

Two German Franciscan monks designed Saint Joseph’s. Adrian Wewer and Leonard Darscheidt were the architects. Wewer designed over 100 churches. He worked primarily in Illinois, Missouri, and Nebraska. Darscheidt worked closely with Wewer. He was a designer and construction supervisor.

Saint Joseph Catholic Church had two tall rectangular towers. They had spires on top. These towers flanked the main entry. The Romanesque-style of the church was beautiful. A large arched stained-glass window was over the entry.

The church served its congregation for many years. Tragedy struck in September 1983. Defective wiring caused a fire. Saint Joseph Catholic Church burned down.

The Los Angeles Conservancy tried to save the church. Preservationist groups joined them. However, the steeple and walls were unsafe. They had to be torn down.

But this is not the end of the story. From the ashes, a new Saint Joseph’s emerged. The congregation is now predominantly Latino. Mariachi Masses were popular. They filled the 1000-seat church before the fire.

A new church was built. It houses the original church bells. It was built partly from the old church’s bricks. Gothic windows evoke memories of the old Saint Joseph’s.

Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Co. helped. They made their auditorium available. The new Saint Joseph’s was ready for Sunday Mass in about a year.

Saint Joseph Catholic Church is a place of worship. It is a symbol of resilience. It is a reminder of faith. It is a special place for the community. It provides hope in the city center.
