Clang. Hear that echoing bell? It beckons us closer to Saint Joseph’s Cathedral. Saint Joseph’s Cathedral stands as Hanoi’s oldest church. It is a testament to faith and history.

Built in 1886, Saint Joseph’s Cathedral reflects a Neo-Gothic style. Its design mirrors the iconic Notre Dame de Paris. The French colonial government erected it as one of their first structures in Indochina.

Imagine Hanoi in the late 19th century. French troops had captured the city. A decade passed before they gained full control. Amidst this backdrop, construction began on Saint Joseph’s Cathedral. The French missionary Paul-François Puginier sought permission from the colonial administration. He chose the abandoned site of Báo Thiên Pagoda. The pagoda’s ruins were cleared to make way for the church.

Look at the exterior. Stone slabs and brick form the facade. Two square towers rise to 103 feet. Each tower holds five bells. The granite walls have weathered over time due to pollution. However, recent renovations have restored its external appearance.

Step inside Saint Joseph’s Cathedral. Tall stained-glass windows adorn the walls. These windows were crafted in France. They were transported to Vietnam. Rib-vaulted ceilings evoke medieval Europe. The sanctuary features polished gilt-trimmed wood. Architectural embellishments reflect the imperial Huế style. To the left of the nave, you can see a statue of the Virgin Mary. It is kept in a palanquin according to local custom.

The interior of Saint Joseph’s Cathedral got a new feature in 2022. A pipe organ was installed. Guido Schumacher, a Belgian craftsman, designed it. The organ has 1850 pipes. It stands as a cultural exchange project between Japan and Belgium.

Saint Joseph’s Cathedral has faced challenges. After 1954, the Catholic Church suffered persecution. Priests were arrested. Church property was seized. Saint Joseph’s Cathedral closed until Christmas Eve 1990. Mass was permitted again.

Today, Saint Joseph’s Cathedral thrives. Mass is celebrated several times a day. Sunday evening Mass draws large crowds. Prayers and hymns resonate in the streets. People gather outside. They listen to the broadcast when they cannot enter.

Saint Joseph’s Cathedral stands west of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. It sits in the Old Quarter. This area boasts boutiques, silks, and restaurants. It is popular among tourists. The cathedral also serves as the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Vietnam. It oversees many churches and parishes.

Take a moment to appreciate Saint Joseph’s Cathedral. It represents faith, resilience, and architectural beauty. It is a lasting symbol of Hanoi’s rich history. Many locals come here to check in, drink lemon tea and chat.
