Saint John’s Ridgewood United Methodist Church

In 1895, a small group of determined families embarked on a mission of faith. They envisioned a beacon of hope in their Ridgewood community: Saint John’s Ridgewood United Methodist Church. Their first gatherings were humble, held in the old Union Street School. Imagine the scene: around ninety souls united in worship, their voices echoing within the school walls. This was the genesis of Saint John’s Ridgewood United Methodist Church. The congregation quickly outgrew their rented space. By 1899, they had secured the current location at the corner of Prospect and Dayton Streets. They dreamed big. Not just a church, but a parsonage and even horse sheds. The cornerstone was laid in 1901, marking a significant milestone in their journey. The first service in their newly built sanctuary took place in 1902. Picture the congregation marching from the old schoolhouse to their new spiritual home, a symbol of their growing faith and commitment. Saint John’s Ridgewood United Methodist Church continued to flourish. By its 50th anniversary in 1945, the need for expansion was clear. Plans were drawn for a larger sanctuary, an educational building, and a chapel. These additions were completed and dedicated in 1953, reflecting the church’s commitment to serving the community. The new sanctuary followed, with its cornerstone laid in 1965 and the first service held in 1966. A highlight of the new sanctuary is the magnificent 65-rank Teller pipe organ. This isn’t just any organ. It was dedicated by the world-renowned organist Virgil Fox in 1967 and is considered one of the finest in the Ridgewood area. From its humble beginnings with eighteen families to a peak membership exceeding 1,300, Saint John’s Ridgewood United Methodist Church has remained a dynamic force in Ridgewood. It stands as a testament to the power of faith, community, and the enduring spirit of those who first envisioned its creation.
