Beneath the shade of a sprawling giant stands St. John’s Presbyterian Church. Did you know that the Moreton Bay Fig tree here is a historical landmark?

St. John’s Presbyterian Church is more than just a place of worship. It is a community hub with deep roots. The church’s history began in 1949. Sixty-seven individuals from Rancho Park and nearby areas came together. They formed this church.

Initially, services were held in various locations. These included private homes and even local theaters. Imagine services in the Bundy Theatre or the Picwood Theatre. The church purchased its current property in November 1949 for $45,000.

The sanctuary we see today was dedicated in November 1962. It is dwarfed by the magnificent Moreton Bay Fig tree. This tree is a symbol of St. John’s. Passersby and visitors often admire it. The tree came from Australia. It was planted in 1875. The original property owner planted it to honor his son.

In 1963, Los Angeles declared it Historic Cultural Monument No. 19. The St. John’s Moreton Bay Fig Tree spans about 124 feet. It is the second-largest of its kind in California. The largest one is in Santa Barbara.

St. John’s has always valued children and youth. Sunday School started with the church’s beginning. The Youth Program began in October 1950. St. John’s Nursery School opened in 1966. The extended day care program started in 1985.

Over the years, St. John’s has had eight pastors and five interim pastors. The church shares its campus with various organizations. These include AA, Scouts, and the Red Cross. Other groups like Clover Elementary School also use the space. Redeemer Baptist Church and others have shared the campus too.

The congregation is active and involved. Members have developed many ministries. These ministries focus on outreach and Christian education. They also provide community service. Small groups offer fellowship and support. Members contribute time and talents generously. They create banners, pew seatbacks, and decorations. They support the church’s administration and missions.

In March 2016, St. John’s affiliated with the Fellowship Community. This is an evangelical group within the Presbyterian Church.

St. John’s Presbyterian Church stands as a beacon. It is rooted in Christ’s love and bears good news. It invites everyone to join in its story. It is a story of faith and community in the heart of Los Angeles.
