Founded in 1945 Saint Johns Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. It began as a small storefront church downtown a humble beginning for a congregation destined for growth. Reverend Benjamin F Davis served as its first pastor. Mamie Lands and Sadie Sanders were among the founding members. Nancy Williams a founding member remains a faithful member today.
Initially located on Capitol Avenue the church quickly outgrew its space. Relocating to Third Street then Fourth Street Saint Johns continued its upward trajectory. Pastor Davis left to serve elsewhere. His successor Reverend J D Griffin guided the church through its expansion to seventy-five members.
A pivotal moment arrived with the arrival of Dr William E Hights in 1962. Under his leadership Saint Johns flourished. He preached a powerful gospel and inspired the congregation. His tenure saw the demolition of the old structure and the construction of the current building a remarkable achievement. This new edifice opened in 1983 after 38 years of planning and fundraising. The church membership swelled to approximately 800 under Pastor Hights’ guidance. This reflects a huge impact on the community.
In 1987 a significant addition came to life. The St John Christian School opened its doors providing Christian based education. Pastor Hights’ legacy extended to his devoted wife Mary. She actively supported his ministry and continues to inspire others. When Pastor Hights passed in 1999 Reverend Wince Batton served as interim pastor.
Reverend Darryl B Heath was installed as the new pastor in 2000. He had served as Pastor Hights’ administrative assistant. He continued the church’s growth adding new ministries. These included a young adult choir children’s praise team and women’s ministry. He oversaw the aggressive plan to pay off the church mortgage securing its future.
Saint Johns Missionary Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith. It is a place where community flourishes and generations connect. Its history is one of growth adaptation and unwavering dedication. It continues to serve its community. Its doors remain open to all who seek spiritual guidance and fellowship. The church continues to thrive today.
