Did you ever hear of a church that started in a school cafeteria? In 1940, Saint John the Divine Episcopal Church held its first service in the River Oaks Elementary School cafeteria. Imagine 136 souls gathered together, celebrating Easter amidst trays and lunch tables. This unconventional beginning marked the start of a remarkable journey for Saint John the Divine. The church’s rapid growth quickly outpaced the elementary school setting. A plot of land on River Oaks Boulevard seemed ideal, but the River Oaks Corporation had other plans. They envisioned a shopping complex, deeming a church “unprofitable.” However, the young rector, Tom Sumners, was undeterred. He rallied the congregation, and by December 1940, a limestone chapel stood on the coveted land. Saint John the Divine continued to flourish, even amidst World War II. By 1944, they acquired most of the land where the church stands today. The present church building, completed in 1954, became a testament to the congregation’s dedication and vision. Over the years, Saint John the Divine has seen several rectors guide its growth. Each leader has left a unique mark. From expansions and renovations to refining the church’s mission of “Changing Lives for God in Christ,” Saint John the Divine has continually evolved. Today, Saint John the Divine Episcopal Church stands as one of the largest Episcopal congregations in the United States. It serves thousands of families, offering diverse worship services and outreach programs. From its humble beginnings in a school cafeteria to its prominent place in the Houston community, Saint John the Divine’s journey is a story of faith, perseverance, and a commitment to serving others.
