Beneath our feet flows the ancient river of Eridanos. We are standing before the small church of Saint John the Baptist. It is also known as Agios Ioannis stin Kolona. That means Saint John around the Column.

This hidden gem sits in Athens’ Psirri district. This small Greek Orthodox church is full of surprises. The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The little chapel was originally built in the 12th century. It stands on the site of an older church from the 9th century.

Athens has many Byzantine-era churches. But Saint John the Baptist is unique. It was built around an ancient Corinthian column. This column dates back to the 5th century BC. In 1917 excavations west of the church unearthed a mosaic floor. A sculpture from the 5th century was also found. Further digging revealed six ancient wells.

If you listen carefully after a heavy rain you can hear water moving. The sound comes from beneath the church. This is the ancient river of Eridanos flowing.

Inside Saint John the Baptist the walls display countless icons. Saint John the Baptist is the most prominent figure. The church serves as a chapel for the nearby Saint Dimitri church. Liturgy is held once a month and on special occasions. Every August 29th they commemorate the beheading of Saint John the Baptist.

Legend says Saint John the Baptist can heal sicknesses of the head. Visitors may ask to see offerings on the column. These offerings show gratitude to the saint for his help.
