Three churches one legacy. That’s the story of Saint John-Saint Matthew-Emanuel Lutheran Church. Standing proudly on Prospect Avenue in Brooklyn this building has witnessed over a century of faith community and change. It’s a story woven from German hymns English prayers and the unifying spirit of a city.

In 1859 Saint Matthew Evangelical English Lutheran Church was born. It was the first English-speaking Lutheran church in Brooklyn a testament to the city’s evolving demographics. After years of renting space they finally built their own sanctuary in 1895. In 1948 Emanuel Lutheran joined them creating Saint Matthew-Emanuel Lutheran Church.

Meanwhile Saint John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church began its journey in 1866 under a Dutch Reformed minister. Initially a German-speaking congregation they built their first small church in 1868. Growth led to a larger brick building constructed in 1899. The German Evangelical Emanuel Lutheran Church branched off from Saint John’s in 1884. They desired a strictly German-speaking service a reflection of the close-knit community of the time. This community thrived until their merger with Saint Matthew’s in 1948.

The mid-20th century brought challenges. In 1955 a fire ravaged Saint John’s interior. Yet the altar mural miraculously survived. The congregation worshipped temporarily at Saint Matthew-Emanuel until their church was restored. This shared adversity strengthened the bond between these two congregations.

The 1960s and 70s saw a growing closeness between Saint John’s and Saint Matthew-Emanuel. The sharing of pastors and services reflected their shared spiritual journey. Finally in 1974 a historic merger united these three churches forever creating Saint John-Saint Matthew-Emanuel Lutheran Church. This merger was not just a combination of buildings. It was a symbol of unity bridging language cultural and historical differences. It represented the growing inclusivity of the church embracing all people.

Today Saint John-Saint Matthew-Emanuel Lutheran Church continues its mission welcoming everyone regardless of background or identity. It stands as a testament to the power of faith resilience and the enduring spirit of community. This remarkable church offers a sanctuary of hope and a rich history waiting to be discovered. It shows how different groups can come together to create a stronger more inclusive whole. The legacy of three churches lives on in this one vibrant house of worship.
