Here stands Saint John of Kronstadt Russian Orthodox Church. This church carries a story of faith, resilience, and a deep connection to a revered saint. Founded in 1967, Saint John of Kronstadt Russian Orthodox Church began in the home of priest Michael Lightfoot. Just two years later in 1969, the church was consecrated only five years after Saint John of Kronstadt’s canonization.
Saint John of Kronstadt Russian Orthodox Church holds a unique place among churches. Surprisingly, it was one of the first churches globally to honor Saint John of Kronstadt after his glorification. Russia only allowed his glorification in 1990 after the Soviet Union’s fall. In 2009, Saint John of Kronstadt Russian Orthodox Church expanded giving it the appearance we see today.
In 2023, Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and Western America visited Saint John of Kronstadt Church. During his visit, he blessed a statue of Saint John. The statue is one of two bronze sculptures created by the OOO Artproekt Russian National Artistic Studio. The Russian Embassy helped deliver it to the USA. The other statue is at St John the Baptist Cathedral in Washington, DC.
Saint John of Kronstadt himself was born in Russia in 1829. Despite his family’s poverty, they instilled in him a deep love for the Church. Even as a young boy, John showed compassion for others. People often asked him to pray for them recognizing his special gift.
At age 10, John’s parents managed to send him to a church school. Initially, he struggled with his studies. But one evening after struggling to understand his lessons, John prayed fervently. Suddenly, his mind opened, and he understood everything. He excelled in his studies and went on to seminary and the Theological Academy in St Petersburg.
Throughout his life, Saint John emphasized forgiveness, meekness, and love. He believed these were central to Christianity. He served at St Andrews Cathedral in Kronstadt. He dedicated himself to being sincere and watchful in his work. Saint John wanted to earn the love of his people. He saw everyone as a friend. He conducted services daily offering prayers for the faithful.
He ministered to exiles in Kronstadt visiting them in their difficult living conditions. Saint John cared for their material needs providing food, medicine, and clothing. Sometimes he gave away his own shoes and clothes to those in need. He founded the Orthodox Christian Brotherhood Guardianship of Apostle Andrew to organize charitable efforts.
Saint John also taught in local schools. He believed in making the Gospel come alive for students. He aimed to fill their souls with Christian values. He encouraged other priests to be models of faith and courage. Saint John of Kronstadt worked tirelessly. He died in 1908. People still pray to him today.
