Gazing upon Saint John Nepomucene’s Roman Catholic Church, can you sense the echoes of Slovak voices that once filled its hallowed halls? This magnificent Romanesque Revival structure, completed in 1925 on East 66th Street, stands as a testament to the dreams and struggles of Slovak immigrants who sought a spiritual haven in their new land. Saint John Nepomucene’s Church wasn’t always here. The parish’s story begins in 1891, with a small group meeting in St. Brigid’s Parish downtown. They formed the Society of St. Matthew, fueled by a desire for their own parish. Archbishop Corrigan granted their wish, and in 1895, the first mass was celebrated in their own church on East 4th Street. The parish faced challenges. Poverty, language barriers, and a constant turnover of priests marked its early years. Yet, the Slovak community persevered. As the community grew and prospered, Saint John Nepomucene’s Church moved uptown to East 57th Street, a former synagogue. By the early 1920s, the need for a larger church and a school became clear. That led them to this impressive edifice, designed by John V. Van Pelt. His design, inspired by the Moissac Abbey in France, might seem a surprising choice for a Slovak parish. Yet, inside, the mosaic triptych over the altar, depicting Saints Cyril and Methodius and St. John Nepomucene himself, proudly proclaimed the parish’s heritage. The church’s namesake, Saint John Nepomucene, is a compelling figure. A 14th-century Bohemian priest, he was martyred for refusing to reveal the queen’s confession to King Wenceslaus. His unwavering commitment to his faith resonates deeply with the story of this church, a place built on the sacrifices and devotion of its parishioners. Saint John Nepomucene’s Church became more than just a place of worship. It became a community center, a place for weddings and funerals, a touchstone for Slovak culture in a rapidly changing city. Even as the neighborhood around it transformed, the church remained a steadfast presence. It served as a refuge for the homeless, like Richard Demattia, who found solace on the church steps, and it hosted memorials for influential figures like Ferdinand Peroutka, the exiled Czechoslovakian journalist. Today, Saint John Nepomucene’s Roman Catholic Church continues to serve its community, a vibrant testament to the enduring spirit of the Slovak people in New York City. It stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of faith, community, and the pursuit of a better life in a new land.
