Saint John Chrysostom Orthodox Church

Whispers of a dream echoed through the west side of Denver. A dream of an English-speaking Orthodox parish. Here, at Saint John Chrysostom Orthodox Church in Lakewood, that dream took root. Saint John Chrysostom Orthodox Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith, perseverance, and community. In 2007, fourteen souls gathered, blessed by Bishop Basil. The mission began, named for St. John Chrysostom, “the golden-tongued.” Saint John Chrysostom Orthodox Church’s journey began in a humble barn. Then, a small storefront on Golden Road, with a biker bar’s music often drowning out evening vespers. The mission moved again, seeking more space for growing families. Another storefront, a brief stay at the Loretto Center, and then the basement of Hosanna Lutheran Church. Each location, a stepping stone. Each move, a testament to the community’s unwavering faith. Finally, in 2014, Saint John Chrysostom Orthodox Church found its home. A former Montessori school on Dartmouth Place in Lakewood. Not just a building, but a space to grow, to worship, to connect. A place with a large yard and playgrounds, a place for children to laugh and learn. The first liturgy was held on St. John Chrysostom’s feast day, November 13, 2014. The church has grown, its choir now a chorus of voices. Children participate in processions, their small feet echoing the steps of those who came before. Saint John Chrysostom Orthodox Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a pan-Orthodox community. A place for retreats, workshops, picnics, and celebrations. A place where faith and love extend beyond the walls, creating a family bound by shared belief. Even through the challenges of COVID-19, the community at Saint John Chrysostom Orthodox Church persevered. They emerged stronger, their numbers replenished, their faith unwavering. They look forward, with hope and anticipation, to the blessings yet to come.
