Saint John Brebeuf Church has served the LaSalle community since 1957. In the early 1950s, LaSalle had a significant Anglophone Catholic population. This was due to the area’s development. The parish initially gathered in Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Cœur’s basement. Later, they met at Leroux School on 9th Avenue.
The first Mass was celebrated on March 3, 1957. Originally, it was named Saint Barbara. The name changed when the new church was built on Bishop Power Street. Bishop Power Street was named after Father William Power. He served as the parish’s second pastor. He later became Bishop of Antigonish in Nova Scotia.
Construction of Saint John Brebeuf Church began in April 1963. The first Mass in the new church was held at Christmas 1964. John Bird, the architect, also designed Saint Thomas a Becket Church. For Saint John Brebeuf Church, Bird used a circular design. This was quite original for the time.
The circular form symbolizes God’s infinite nature. This design choice reflects a deep theological meaning. The parish celebrated its church’s 25th anniversary in 1989. The 50th anniversary of its founding was celebrated in 2007.
Saint John Brebeuf Church is a vibrant community. Its members actively participate in various activities. For example, they joined the Saint Patrick’s Parade on March 19, 2017. Parishioners are also involved in social justice initiatives. The parish welcomed a Syrian family in 2017.
In recognition of their humanitarian work, Archbishop Christian Lépine presented the Monseigneur-Ignace-Bourget Diocesan Award of Merit on November 12, 2016. This award recognized the community’s dedication to helping others.
Masses are held regularly at Saint John Brebeuf Church. You can attend services throughout the week. There are masses on Sundays at 9:00 am and 11:00 am. Weekday masses are held Monday through Friday at 9:00 am. Saturday Mass is at 4:30 pm. Adoration takes place on Fridays from 9:30 am to 9:45 am. Confessions are available 30 minutes before weekend services.
