Here stands St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith and community.

St. Joan of Arc Parish started humbly. It began in homes on the Westside of Los Angeles. This was under Reverend Eugene MacSweeny’s leadership.

He had vision and energy. MacSweeny purchased properties. He planned the parish elementary school. It opened in September 1947. He also built a convent for the Sisters of Notre Dame. They staffed the school. MacSweeny remodeled a walnut factory. It became the Parish Hall.

In August 1953 Monsignor MacSweeny laid the cornerstone. This was for the present-day church building. The first Mass was on June 13 1954. It is still the hub of parish life. The parish grew from a few to over 1400 families.

In 1974 Monsignor Robert F. Condon became pastor. He introduced the first Spanish-language Mass. This invited the Spanish-speaking community. They became part of parish life. Condon started Saturday religious education. He also founded the 50+ Club. The Guadalupanas Association was also founded by him.

Reverend John F. Cunningham became pastor after Condon. In 1993 the parish celebrated its Golden Jubilee. Cardinal Roger Mahony celebrated a special Mass. The Sisters of Notre Dame left. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet moved in.

January 1996 marked a new era. Reverend James H. Barnes Jr. became pastor. The parish underwent renewal. This included renovations. The parish hall served as the church. This happened during renovations.

In 2006 the St. Joan of Arc Nelson Family Preschool opened. This was to increase school enrollment. Sadly both schools closed in 2009. Under-enrollment was the reason.

In July 2014 Reverend Joseph Quan Nguyen became Parish Administrator. Later he was installed as the fifth Pastor.

Today St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church continues its mission. It is building the Kingdom of God in West Los Angeles. The community is nourished by the Word. Sacraments guide them. They live the Gospel through service and love. Daily masses are held here. Confession is available.

St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church stands as a beacon of hope. It embodies faith in the community.
