Seventy-five years ago, a determined group, along with Father Thomas Lahart, planted the seeds of Saint Jane Frances Catholic Church. They started with humble beginnings, celebrating Mass in a barn and even a tent. Imagine having to lift the tent flaps during early morning Mass to let car headlights illuminate the service! Those early days were full of challenges, but their sacrifices laid the foundation for the vibrant community that thrives at Saint Jane Frances Catholic Church today. One of their first acts of community building was establishing a school. When Saint Jane Frances School opened, classes were held in unconventional spaces – St. Jane’s Hall, the rectory garage – demonstrating the resourcefulness of the early parishioners. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet played a pivotal role in these early years, shaping both the parish and the school. Saint Jane Frances Catholic Church has witnessed and embraced change throughout its history. Founded before the Second Vatican Council, the church, under the guidance of Father Joseph Gilmore, diligently implemented the Council’s transformative documents in the late 1960s. The church has always opened its doors to diverse cultures. In 1983, the growing Filipino community established its own ministries. Later, Hispanic ministries blossomed, including the Luz del Valle prayer group, formed in 1984. This rich tapestry of cultures is a testament to the inclusive spirit of Saint Jane Frances Catholic Church. The 65th-anniversary celebration, with its vibrant cultural fair, underscored the beauty of this diversity. Today, the church continues to foster spiritual growth with both English and Spanish prayer groups. Service to others has always been a cornerstone of Saint Jane Frances Catholic Church. The Pan de Vida Ministry, led by José María Ruiz and his wife Olivia, embodies this spirit, providing vital support to those in need. Hundreds of parishioners contribute their time and talents to various ministries, from choirs and ushers to Eucharistic ministers and those who comfort the sick and grieving. Saint Jane Frances Catholic Church has served as a beacon of faith and community for 75 years, from its humble beginnings to its vibrant present. It’s a place where diverse cultures unite, where service flourishes, and where the spirit of the risen Christ is shared with open hearts.
