The scent of old wood and aged stone hangs in the air. This is Saint James Kingsessing Episcopal Church. Feel the history breathe around you.

This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to Philadelphia’s rich past. Built in 1762 Saint James Kingsessing is deeply rooted in the legacy of New Sweden. Swedish settlers and their descendants established this congregation. It’s a sister church to the renowned Gloria Dei in Southwark. Think about that for a moment. This building has witnessed centuries unfold.

Imagine the bustling activity during its construction. More than a hundred people at a time toiled on this very site. James Coultas a surveyor and engineer oversaw the project. The community’s devotion shaped every stone. They even received funding from the royal Governor of Pennsylvania. The original church held 600 people a remarkable capacity for the time. Woodland Avenue then known as the Kings Highway ran right past.

The Revolutionary War left its mark. British General Sir William Howe made his headquarters across from the church’s burial ground. Revolutionary soldiers including Lieutenant Peter Jones and General Josiah Harmar now rest within those sacred grounds. They are among many buried here. A poignant reminder of the struggles that shaped this nation.

The 19th century saw Saint James Kingsessing flourish. Wealthy businessmen from manufacturing and trade built their mansions nearby. Many became members and vestrymen of the church. The congregation grew necessitating an expansion in 1854. Thomas Sparks a prominent member championed education. He funded the construction of a Sunday school building in 1859. This building expanded in 1904 to serve the growing community.

The church’s Swedish heritage is honored in the annual Lucia Fest. A vibrant celebration that continues to this day. Saint James Kingsessing stands as a beacon. A testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of a community. A living link to Philadelphia’s rich history. Take a moment to breathe in the significance. Let the stories etched in stone inspire you.
