Founded in 1867 Saint James Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It’s a place where history resonates in every pew. Rev William M Jasper Sr established this great church. He served as its first pastor. The church’s initial sanctuary and other facilities occupied a single acre of land. Sister Harriet Jasper deeded the first half-acre in 1897. Bro William and Sis Mary Ware deeded the second half in 1910.

Tragedy struck in 1953. A devastating fire destroyed the church and its possessions. The church was without a pastor at that time. Rev CW Wilson of Athens Texas was then elected pastor. A carpenter by trade he spearheaded the rebuilding effort. With the help of the Palestine Bowen District Association and the community a new sanctuary was erected. This building was dedicated in July 1955.

Subsequent years witnessed renovations and growth. A cafeteria was added in 1968. New pews were installed in 1982 under the leadership of Rev Frank Jones. Rev Jones served faithfully for 28 years. He resigned in 1996. Rev TL Walker then took over. He served until 1999. Rev Michael Thompson became the church’s 26th pastor in 2000. Under his leadership Saint James moved locations in January 2008.
