Saint Isidore was a Spanish day laborer. He was known for his piety toward the poor and animals. He is the Catholic patron saint of farmers. His feast day is celebrated on May 15th. St. Isidore was born in 1070 to devout parents in Madrid. He was named for St. Isidore of Seville.

Isidore worked as a hired hand for a wealthy landowner. The farm was near the city. He shared everything with the poor, even his meals.

Isidore married Maria Torribia. They had a son. Their son once fell into a deep well. His parents prayed. The water rose miraculously. It brought the child up. They vowed sexual abstinence to thank God. They lived in separate houses. Their son died young. Isidore died on May 15, 1130. He died close to Madrid.

Isidore always heard Mass before work. He went to churches in Madrid. His fellow laborers complained. They said Isidore was late. The master found Isidore at prayer. An angel was doing his plowing. On another day, his master saw angels plowing. Isidore’s work equaled three laborers.

St. Isidore brought his master’s daughter back to life. He made a fountain of fresh water burst forth. This quenched his master’s thirst. One snowy day, he passed pigeons searching for food. He poured half his corn on the ground for them. At the mill, the bag was full. It produced two bags of flour.

Isidore’s wife, Maria, always kept stew on the fireplace. Isidore brought home anyone hungry. One day, she served many people. She said the pot was empty. He told her to check again. She spooned out enough stew for everyone.

He appeared to Alfonso VIII of Castile. He showed him a hidden path. This helped him surprise the Moors. King Philip III of Spain touched Isidore’s relics. He was cured of a disease. The king replaced the reliquary with a silver one. St. Isidore was beatified in 1619. Pope Paul V beatified him. Pope Gregory XV canonized him in 1622.

St. Isidore’s life reminds us of the dignity of work. We should work with the poor. Ordinary life can lead to holiness. If our spiritual selves are in order, our earthly commitments will fall in order. In 1947, he was named patron of farmers. His feast day is celebrated in all U.S. Dioceses.
