Have you ever wondered what a Roman lawyer, a missionary, and a musical innovator have in common? They all come together in the remarkable story of Saint Gregory the Great Church, right here in San Antonio. Saint Gregory the Great Church wasn’t always this grand structure. The journey began in 1955, north of St. Mary Magdalen. Eleven and a half acres were purchased on Dewhurst Road and Beryl Drive. Msgr. Michael J. Holden took on the task of building a church and school. A temporary church and twelve classrooms were ready by June 1955, blessed by Archbishop Robert E. Lucey. Saint Gregory the Great Church started with 635 families. The school opened its doors in September 1955 with 465 children. The current church building began construction on February 21, 1965, also blessed by Archbishop Lucey. The original temporary church was transformed into a library and school administration offices. The church is dedicated to Pope Gregory I, a fascinating figure in history. He began as a Roman lawyer, but his path took a dramatic turn toward monastic life. He’s remembered for his emphasis on missionary work, sending St. Augustine to Canterbury. Pope Gregory also implemented lasting changes to the Mass, including the placement of the Our Father. He stressed service to the poor, particularly by deacons. He’s even linked to the development of Gregorian chant, a style of music synonymous with medieval monasteries. A famous story involves a Eucharistic Miracle during a Mass celebrated by St. Gregory. A woman who doubted the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ laughed during Communion. Saint Gregory prayed, and the consecrated hosts transformed into actual flesh and blood. This miracle deepened the woman’s faith. This story, depicted in art throughout the ages, adds to the mystique surrounding Saint Gregory. Saint Gregory the Great Church stands not just as a building, but as a testament to faith, history, and the enduring legacy of a remarkable Pope.
