Picture this. You stand before Saint Georges Premier in Milan. Its elegant facade hints at centuries of history.

Saint Georges Premier wasn’t always this grand. Its origins trace back to 751. Bishop Natale founded the first church here. King Liutprando donated land. The church was dedicated to Saint George a martyr beloved by the Lombards.

Over time Saint Georges Premier changed. The original Longobard church was rebuilt in the 11th century. The present structure reflects various renovations. The Romanesque facade from the 12th century remains. Interesting animal and vine carvings adorn the main pillars. These are remnants of the Romanesque era.

The 18th century brought significant changes. The Baroque facade designed by Francesco Croce replaced earlier structures. Three bronze statues now crown the front. Saint George stands proudly in the center. Two angels flank him. They replaced the original stone statues.

Inside Saint Georges Premier displays impressive artistry. Bernardino Luini’s frescoes grace the Chapel of the Corpus Domini. Other masters such as Montalto and Daniele Crespi contributed. The 18th-century decoration of the side chapels is particularly lavish.

In the 19th century Luigi Cagnola oversaw extensive interior renovations. The presbytery was redesigned to meet post-Vatican II liturgical needs. The church now stands a testament to Milan’s rich past. Yet it also reflects modern adaptations.

Legend says the relics of the Three Wise Men were hidden in the tall bell tower in 1164. This was to protect them from Barbarossa. He had destroyed parts of the original bell tower.

Saint Georges Premier continues to serve the Milanese community. Its enduring presence speaks volumes. This church witnesses the city’s evolution. Its beauty and history continue to inspire. It reminds us of the enduring power of faith and art. Consider the layers of history behind this beautiful Milanese landmark.
