Saint Georges Episcopal Church

Did you know that Saint Georges Episcopal Church was founded on pure enthusiasm? It all started with the Rt. Rev. John Hines, a Bishop of Texas who would later become the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. In 1950, he rallied a small group of Episcopalians at what was then the northernmost edge of the city. Bishop Hines orchestrated a rather adventurous purchase: a surplus army chapel from Bastrop’s Camp Swift. The chapel was relocated to the newly acquired property under the cover of night, a daring dash across the main runway of Austin’s airport! In those early days, Saint Georges Episcopal Church was nurtured by dedicated individuals like the Rev. Bill Brewster, the founding headmaster of St. Stephen’s School, and the Rev. Malcolm Riker, a prolific church founder. As the Saint Georges Episcopal Church community grew, it birthed new ministries like the thriving St. George’s Episcopal School and St. George’s Court, a senior housing community. Saint Georges Episcopal Church made history in December 1989 by becoming the first faith community in Austin to open its doors to the homeless during freezing winter nights, a testament to their commitment to compassion. Today, the spirit of outreach and hospitality continues to define Saint Georges Episcopal Church, a place where faith is shared through action and service.
