Have you heard of a church that blossomed in the San Fernando Valley? Let’s talk about Saint George Syrian Orthodox Church. Saint George Syrian Orthodox Church stands here as a testament to faith and community. It was established with high hopes on September 1, 1987, under the guidance of Archbishop Athanasius Y. Samuel. The church’s early years were shaped by Reverend Father Nemeh Farah, who served as the main minister for seven years. Under his leadership, the congregation grew from a few families to around two hundred. In 1993, Reverend Fr. Farah partially retired. The church expressed their gratitude and ordained Reverend Fr. Botrous Rouboz, who became the main minister. Rev. Fr. Farah continued to offer guidance until his passing in 2001.
For three years, Saint George Syrian Orthodox Church held services in a rented Protestant church. In 1991, the congregation purchased their current location at 925 Harding St. The sanctuary seats 200 people. There is also a social hall with the same capacity. Saint George Syrian Orthodox Church has ambitious plans. They are always striving to enlarge the social hall. They also have a vision for their young people. They hope to nurture a Christian generation strong in the Syriac Orthodox faith. They believe in the importance of their deacons and choir in achieving this goal. They dedicate their efforts to this beautiful aspiration. In November 1995, the Archdiocese of the United States and Canada was divided into three separate Archdioceses by the Holy Synod, led by Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I, Iwas. Saint George Syrian Orthodox Church fell under the auspices of the newly formed Western United States Archdiocese, led by Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan.
