A century’s worth of prayers whispered within these walls. Welcome to Saint Gabriel’s Episcopal Church. This unassuming building on Hawthorne Street in Brooklyn holds a remarkable story. Originally envisioned as a grand two-story structure it began as a humble basement in 1905. This basement built by the gentry served as a place of worship for the descendants of slaves. It was a testament to their faith and resilience. Concrete blocks and wood formed its walls. Asphalt shingles covered its roof. For over 100 years the congregation gathered in that modest space.

The small basement church seated around two hundred people. Its first service was actually held in 1906 in a private home. A lot was then purchased for the church’s construction. However limited funds meant the congregation only built the basement. It served the church for more than eighty years. The original building was a true labor of love a symbol of a community’s unwavering dedication.

The church’s history mirrors the evolving demographics of its neighborhood. Initially serving mostly European immigrants. Saint Gabriel’s now welcomes worshippers from the Caribbean Central and South America West Africa and the United States. The congregation reflects Brooklyn’s vibrant and diverse character. The new building which opened in 1991 shows that growth. This new structure offers ample space for worship and community activities.

Today Saint Gabriel’s is more than just a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It offers programs for senior citizens and young people. It collaborates with local organizations for impactful initiatives. Its ministries extend to various aspects of life including advocacy aging health children’s and youth programs food pantries immigration services meal programs prison services and even shelter and housing. Saint Gabriel’s stands as a beacon of hope and support in its community.

Imagine the countless prayers shared within these walls. The joyous celebrations. The quiet moments of solace. This is not merely a building but a living testament to faith community and perseverance. It shows the power of faith to sustain a community through hardship. Saint Gabriel’s continues its mission to spread God’s work through worship witness education and outreach. A century of faith continues to bloom here.
