In 1918, Bangkok buzzed with a thirst for knowledge after the First World War. Demand for education surged. The Brothers of Saint Gabriel, having already founded Assumption College, saw the need for another institution. This marked the genesis of Saint Gabriel’s College. Brother Martin de Tours, a visionary educator, spearheaded the project. He secured land near Saint Francis Xavier Church in Samsen. Construction began in 1920, with Mr. Be’quelin as chief engineer. Brother Martin himself designed the main building. Saint Gabriel’s College officially opened its doors in 1920, even before the main building was finished. Classes initially took place in Mr. Berli’s house, with 141 eager students. The iconic main building, nicknamed “tuk-daeng” (the red building), was completed in 1922. This distinctive structure, painted light red, cost around 100,000 Thai baht. Saint Gabriel’s College has since expanded, educating students from grades 1 through 12. Admission, especially to first grade, is highly competitive, with roughly 416 students accepted each year out of thousands of applicants. Saint Gabriel’s College maintains a strong emphasis on English language instruction, known for its intensive program. The college’s symbol, a coat of arms, speaks to its core values. The “A.M.” and white tuberose represent Ave Maria and purity. A boat and Polaris symbolize life’s struggles and the guiding light of hope. “DS” and a cross stand for Dieu Seul (God Alone) and the sacrifice of Jesus. The surrounding flower serves as a reminder to do good for oneself and others. Today, Saint Gabriel’s College comprises twelve buildings and a stadium, each contributing to its rich history. The original “tuk-daeng” building now serves as a memorial to the school’s beginnings. From its humble start in a borrowed house to its present-day prominence, Saint Gabriel’s College has shaped countless lives.
