Picture this. You’re standing before Saint Francis Xavier Church in Philadelphia. Its imposing presence speaks volumes. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and the vibrant history of Fairmount.

Founded in 1839 by Bishop Francis Patrick Kenrick Saint Francis Xavier Church initially served Irish and German immigrants. They toiled in the neighborhood’s factories and shops. The church’s cornerstone was laid in 1894. Its location was then quite central. The area was filled with row houses and the Philadelphia Waterworks. The Parkway and Art Museum were yet to exist.

The current building however is not the first. It’s the second Saint Francis Xavier Church. The original was at 25th and Biddle streets. It was damaged by railroad construction. Father James Maginn oversaw the construction of the present church. He also built a new rectory a school and a convent. Tragically the nearly completed church suffered a devastating fire in 1906. A fire in a nearby hat factory spread quickly. Father John J Fleming bravely rescued sacred objects from the burning building. Parishioners also helped saving what they could.

The reconstruction cost a staggering one hundred thousand dollars. The rebuilt Saint Francis Xavier Church reopened in 1908. It stands as a symbol of the community’s unwavering devotion. The church’s High Altar remains unchanged. It stands as a testament to the community’s faith. It’s a unique feature. Many churches altered their altars after Vatican II reforms.

Today Saint Francis Xavier Church continues to serve its community. It’s a focal point for the Fairmount neighborhood. It’s a place of worship a gathering place and a cherished landmark. The church’s enduring presence reflects the spirit of its founders. It also embodies the resilience of its people. Its beauty is a testament to their steadfast faith. It remains a beacon in Fairmount welcoming new generations of parishioners.
