The cornerstone. It whispers tales of faith perseverance and community. This is Saint Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Los Angeles.

Founded in 1938 by Archbishop John J Cantwell the church’s story began humbly. The first mass was held not in a grand building but in the Live Oaks Cafe. Imagine the scene parishioners gathering in a small cafe their faith a beacon in the midst of everyday life.

Then came the growth. The post-war boom brought a surge in population. Saint Francis De Sales Parish needed a larger space. Father James O’Mahony a visionary leader oversaw the building of a new church and school. Sadly he did not live to see the new church’s completion. His tireless work laid the foundation for the beautiful structure we see today. The new church’s first mass was on September 13 1959. The building stands as a testament to his dedication.

Architect Daniel Elliott designed the present church. T-S Construction brought his vision to life. The red brick school building followed in 1961 a symbol of the parish’s commitment to education. In 1969 a Walcker pipe organ was proudly installed filling the church with majestic sounds. The organ sadly was almost destroyed in the 1994 earthquake a devastating blow to the community. It was later replaced with a Roger’s organ.

Saint Francis De Sales Parish has faced challenges. It has also celebrated triumphs. It is a story of resilience faith and the enduring spirit of a community bound together. The church continues to serve. It serves as a place of worship learning and connection. The church stands as a symbol of steadfast faith in the heart of Los Angeles. The legacy of Saint Francis de Sales the patron saint lives on in this vibrant parish.
