Let’s step back to 1844. Father Zachary Kunz founded Saint Francis of Assisi Church. He was a Hungarian Franciscan priest. He faced a dilemma at his previous parish. A dispute led to the closure of St. John the Baptist Church. Father Kunz sought to provide a place of worship for his parishioners. He established Saint Francis of Assisi. Bishop John McCloskey laid the cornerstone on May 9th.
The parish grew over the next four decades. By 1890, a larger church was needed. Architect Henry Erhardt designed the new Saint Francis of Assisi Church. The new Saint Francis of Assisi Church was completed in 1892. Its Gothic Revival style reflects the architectural trends of the time. The construction cost about $60,000. Archbishop Michael Corrigan blessed the church.
The neighborhood around Saint Francis Church changed dramatically. The area transformed into the Tenderloin District. It was known for its theaters and nightlife. Saint Francis Church adapted to serve a transient population. This population included commuters, shoppers, and tourists. The friars introduced innovative services.
One such service was the Nightworkers Mass. It catered to those working night shifts. This included actors and newspapermen. Saint Francis Church became the first in America to offer a midday Mass. This accommodated daytime workers.
The Great Depression brought new challenges. In 1929, Saint Francis Church started a breadline. It provided food for the hungry. This breadline still operates today. It is the oldest continuously running breadline in the United States.
In 1928, a large mosaic was installed. Rudolph Margreiter created The Glorification of the Mother of Jesus. It became a prominent feature. Renovations in the late 1950s added a courtyard and new entrances.
Father Mychal Judge was a priest at Saint Francis Church. He served as the New York City Fire Department chaplain. On September 11, 2001, he rushed to the World Trade Center. He provided solace to victims. Father Judge was killed by falling debris. His funeral mass was held at Saint Francis Church.
Today, Saint Francis Church continues to evolve. It offers ministries in multiple languages. It serves a diverse congregation. The Saint Francis Residences provide housing for the mentally ill.
