Hidden amidst the Bronx’s vibrant tapestry stands Saint Frances of Rome Church. Its story is one of resilience faith and community. Established in 1898 the parish initially held services in a tent. Imagine 300 people kneeling on grass attending Mass. A storm even blew the tent down. Services then moved to a private home then a temporary wooden structure.

The original church building was constructed on Richardson Avenue in 1901. Father Francis P Moore the first pastor served the parish for over three decades. He oversaw its growth and expansion. He even painted murals in the church’s sanctuary and sacristy. As the Bronx grew so did the parish. Several new parishes broke off from Saint Frances of Rome’s original boundaries. They included Saint Barnabas Saint Anthony Saint Francis of Assisi and Nativity.

The need for a larger church led to the purchase of land on Barnes Avenue. The current lower church was built in 1926. The upper church a magnificent addition designed by Paul W Reilly opened in 1967. Cardinal Spellman dedicated it. The Delaware Organ Company crafted a new pipe organ to grace this modern space. The church’s sleek modern design contrasts with its rich history.

The merger of four parishes in 2015 added complexity to Saint Frances of Rome’s identity. Two church buildings Our Lady of Grace and Saint Anthony remain closed yet available for future use. The parish’s motto Out of Many One reflects its diverse congregation. It has always been a welcoming place for people from all backgrounds.
