In 2013, the Frassati Fellowship of Catholic Young Adults chose Saint Edmund’s as its base. This was after the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. The storm had wreaked havoc on homes and structures.
The Frassati Fellowship organized volunteers in the months following the hurricane. They later secured an anonymous grant. The grant was for restoring the church grounds. Key members of the Breezy Point community spearheaded the restoration.
The hurricane’s salt water had killed most of the trees and plants. A new salt-tolerant planting plan was essential. Being Here Landscape Architecture designed native coastal plantings. They worked with Frassati Fellowship and Breezy Point representatives. The team oversaw the cleanup and replanting.
Volunteers played a vital role. They removed dead plant material and debris. They replanted the grounds with new vegetation.
Saint Edmund’s functions as a town center. The restored grounds offered inspiration. This was during Breezy Point’s recovery. Switchgrasses and dune grasses now rustle in the breeze. Tough native trees and plants are taking root. They thrive in this challenging coastal location.
