Rooted in faith and growing in community that’s the motto of Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church. This multigenerational parish in Northwest Houston is a testament to enduring faith. It’s a place where elders and children find purpose. Friendships blossom under God’s love. Hospitality reigns.

Saint Dunstan’s story began humbly in September 1966. Reverend Douglas W Hutchings held services on a resident’s patio. A small group of Champions area residents formed the foundation. On February 12 1968 51 Episcopalians petitioned the Bishop of Texas to establish a mission. The Diocese approved it. St Dunstan’s Episcopal Church was officially born. Reverend Hutchings became its first Vicar.

In June 1969 4.5 acres were purchased. This land became the church’s permanent home on Stuebner Airline Road. Three more acres were added in 1970. The first building was completed and dedicated in 1971. Saint Dunstan’s became a parish in 1972. Reverend Clark Gardiner Lennard became the first Rector. His leadership propelled the church’s growth. His influence is still felt today.

The church expanded. More land was purchased. A pipe organ found its home within the walls. Temporary buildings provided space for Christian Education. The dream of a larger nave took shape. A building program raised almost a million dollars. Construction of the present nave began in 1980. The first services in the new nave were held during Christmas 1980. The facilities were dedicated on Easter Eve 1981.

Lennard Hall was built in 1982. Bells cast in Holland were installed. They were named for influential figures in the parish’s history Dunstan Richardson Hutchings and Lennard. Tragedy struck in 1984. Reverend Lennard passed away. The church continued its ministry. Reverend John R Bentley Jr became the second Rector.

The need for more space remained. Another temporary building was added. In 1992 more land was acquired. A new Education Building and parking lot were constructed. Lennard Hall was converted into staff offices. Canterbury Chapel was added. A columbarium was installed. The new facilities were dedicated in 1995. The church affiliated with the American Anglican Council in 1998.

The Education Building was renamed The Bentley Education Center in 2004. Reverend Bentley was named Rector Emeritus. Through the years Saint Dunstan’s faced challenges. These included paying off debt and handling deferred maintenance. The church continued to adapt and grow. It added services and ministries. It navigated difficult times with resilience and faith. It remains a vibrant and active part of the Houston community. It continues to spread God’s love.

The church’s history reflects a journey of faith. It demonstrates dedication and community spirit. It’s a story of growth adaptation and enduring love.
