Wasn’t it a somber start for Saint David’s Episcopal Church? Its first service in 1931 wasn’t held in a grand cathedral. Instead it was in the chapel of McNamara’s Mortuary. Fifty-one parishioners and a borrowed choir of fourteen bravely sang hymns amidst the hushed solemnity. Imagine the contrast!

Saint David’s Episcopal Church North Hollywood a mission named after the patron saint of medieval Wales quickly earned a reputation. It became known as “the friendliest church in the San Fernando Valley”. As its congregation grew the church outgrew its unusual home. In 1937 Saint David’s Episcopal Church moved to a more permanent location. This was on the south side of Magnolia Boulevard and Lemp Avenue.

The arrival of Reverend Dr Alex K Campbell in 1939 marked a turning point. He became the church’s long-term vicar. Under his leadership membership soared. The church school flourished. Four years later in 1943 Saint David’s Episcopal Church achieved a significant milestone. It transitioned from a ward of the Bishop to a full-fledged parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

But the story of Saint David’s Episcopal Church wasn’t without its controversies. In 2004 it became one of three parishes to leave the national Episcopal Church. This was due to disagreements over theological interpretations and views on homosexuality. The secession caused a significant rift. It sparked legal battles over property ownership.

The church’s building a brick structure with striking stained-glass windows became a focal point of the conflict. The congregation however remained steadfast in its beliefs. They ultimately affiliated with an Anglican diocese in Uganda. They sought a more theologically conservative environment. They continued to serve their community. Saint David’s Episcopal Church stood its ground. It represents a complex chapter in the history of the Episcopal Church in the United States. It shows the enduring power of faith and conviction. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its congregation.
