Did you know that General Anthony Wayne a Revolutionary War hero is buried here at Saint David’s Episcopal Church? This isn’t just any church. Saint David’s is a place steeped in history a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of the Welsh settlers who founded it.

Saint David’s Episcopal Church in Radnor Pennsylvania has a story that stretches back to the early 1700s. Long before the bustling suburbs surrounded it this was a frontier outpost. Welsh Quakers and other Welsh people sought refuge in Pennsylvania’s tolerant environment. They yearned for their own language and faith. They established the church around 1700 initially meeting in private homes. This first church was a humble log structure offering both worship and protection from Native American attacks.

Ten years later a significant event took place. The cornerstone of the current historic stone church was laid on May 9 1715. It was named after Saint David the patron saint of Wales a clear expression of their heritage. Remarkably several clergymen from other denominations participated in the ceremony. This demonstrates religious harmony in an era often marked by division. The church was unusual. It lacked a floor until 1765. The simple structure with its box pews still stands today a powerful reminder of the past.

The American Revolution brought turmoil. Resentment against the Church of England ran high. General Wayne a prominent member of Saint David’s led the opposition. The rector resigned his loyalty divided between church and country. The church itself played a surprising role. It sheltered soldiers from both sides of the conflict. Continental Army soldiers even stripped the lead from its windows to make bullets. Following the Battle of Brandywine sixteen British soldiers were buried in the church cemetery.

Despite its challenges Saint David’s persevered. It became part of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States in 1784. It was officially incorporated in 1792. The arrival of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1832 transformed the area. Saint David’s witnessed the growth of a suburban community its congregation diversifying with new urban parishioners. Over time it expanded adding a parish house a new chapel and educational buildings.

Today Saint David’s stands as the largest Episcopal parish in Pennsylvania. It’s not only a place of worship but also a historical landmark. The original stone church and its cemetery are on the National Register of Historic Places. The church’s history is a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of faith perseverance and community. A testament to the enduring spirit of those who built it and those who continue to serve within its walls. The spirit of Saint David’s is not only in its past but also in its present and future. It’s a place where history comes alive in each service. Each visitor experiences the legacy of faith courage and community that has shaped it for three centuries.
