Did you know that St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church began in a sandwich shop? It is quite an unusual beginning. Let’s explore the story of this vibrant church.
In 1978, the Diocese of Texas established St. Cuthbert. In 1979, it became an official mission. The Rev. Jeremiah Ward led a small group of 25 members. They gathered for Sunday worship. Their meeting place was Bob and Linda’s Sandwich Shop on Highway 6.
By 1981, the church had grown. It relocated to an A-frame structure. This new location was on Addicks-Satsuma Road. The Rev. Tom Brindley became the new Vicar. The congregation continued to grow. In September 1983, they built a new building. It was located on Willow River Drive in Copperfield. St. Cuthbert achieved parish status in 1992. Father Tom Brindley served as Rector until 1994.
The Rev. Dr. Steve Sellers became Rector in August 1994. He served until May 1999. In May 2000, The Rev. Desmond Goonesekera became Rector. He retired on February 10 2013. Under the guidance of Fr. Brindley Fr. Sellers and Fr. Goonesekera, the church grew. It expanded from 25 families to around 300 families.
Due to this growth, land was purchased in February 2007. The location was at the corner of West Road and Queenston. In November 2007, ground was broken. Construction began on a new facility. The building was dedicated on August 23 2009.
St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church is a multicultural community. It welcomes everyone. The church offers various ministries. St. Cuthbert School provides a loving Christian environment. Children can learn and grow here. Lord of the Streets or LOTS helps the homeless. Volunteers cook and serve breakfast. They also provide sack lunches. The Meals Ministry delivers meals. They assist individuals and families facing crisis or illness.
St. Cuthbert’s music ministry is also noteworthy. The CuthbertPraise Hymn Project began in the early 1990s. It started at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church. Barbara, the Minister of Music since 1989, and her husband Randy Adams are at the heart of it. Randy plays several instruments at St. Cuthbert. He is also a professor of Trumpet at Sam Houston State University.
The church’s mission is building the kingdom of God together. St. Cuthbert invites all to experience the transforming power. All are welcome to feel the accepting love of Jesus Christ. The church is very vibrant. It serves Copperfield and northwest Houston.
