Marvelous isn’t it? This church of Saint Constantine. Its imposing presence dominates the Athenian streetscape. Built between 1871 and 1905 it stands as a testament to a bygone era. It was commissioned by the Municipality of Athens. The reason? To celebrate the birth of Prince Constantine heir to the throne. The renowned architect Lyssandros Kaftantzoglou designed the magnificent three-aisled basilica. He masterfully blended neoclassical and Renaissance elements. The result is a striking structure. Notice the elegant dome adorned with blue copper leaves. The two octagonal belfries add to its grandeur.

The interior is equally breathtaking. Renowned hagiographers Anastasios Loukidis and Fotis Kontoglou created the elaborate frescoes. These stunning works of art depict scenes from the lives of saints. They add a vibrant layer of religious narrative to the space. The church is actually tripartite. The central nave is dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen. The northern nave honors Saint Eleftherios. This is because the church’s inauguration occurred on December 15th his feast day. The southern nave is dedicated to John the Baptist. There was already a smaller church dedicated to him on this site.

The church of Saint Constantine wasn’t immune to the ravages of time. The earthquakes of 1981 and 1991 caused extensive damage. The restoration took more than fifteen years. It is a testament to human dedication. The church is a beautiful example of how human resilience triumphs over adversity. The meticulous efforts of experts restored the church. It now echoes the glory of its past.

Today Saint Constantine’s Church stands as a symbol of Athens’ modern history. It is a site of both religious significance and architectural beauty. It is inextricably linked to the city’s rich cultural heritage. This impressive temple deserves a moment of quiet contemplation. Take a moment to admire its neo-classical facade and imposing presence. It’s a sight you won’t soon forget. Enjoy the beauty of Saint Constantine.
