The story of Saint Columba’s Church whispers of a faith that took root in the heart of Wilston, a suburb of Brisbane, in 1915. Nestled amidst the bustling urban landscape, Saint Columba’s is a testament to the unwavering belief of the Catholic community. When you look up at the imposing facade you witness a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture, a style popularized by the prominent Brisbane architect G.H.M. Addison. The church boasts a steep, tiled gable roof and a captivating array of round arches, adorned with white rendered bands, plinths, coppings, and intricate moldings.

Saint Columba’s is a beacon of history, a place that has witnessed the growth and transformation of Wilston. This area thrived in the early 20th century, thanks to the arrival of the railway line to Enoggera in 1899 and the extension of the tramline to Windsor in 1914. The influx of new residents, many of Catholic faith, called for a place of worship in their locality. It was the vision of Archbishop Duhig and a local resident, Mr Hurley, who recognized the need for a church in Wilston.

The birth of Saint Columba’s involved a dedicated community, fundraising events, and a generous donation from a single individual. It was Archbishop Duhig who selected a prime spot on a hilltop, ensuring a commanding view of the surrounding area. The foundation stone was laid in 1914, a time when the world was embroiled in the Great War. The ceremony was symbolic, with two Coadjutor Bishops, Mannix and Duhig, joining hands to lay the stone, a testament to the unity of the Catholic Church amidst challenging times.

Fast forward to today, Saint Columba’s remains a vital presence in Wilston, a landmark that holds the memories of its community. The church, initially a smaller structure, has seen numerous additions over its lifetime. Extensions to the nave, designed by Frank Cullen in 1936, accommodate the ever-growing community. The school, a convent, and a presbytery, all designed by the renowned architect Addison, joined the church in the following years.

But Saint Columba’s provides more than just a beautiful building. Its walls are a repository of stories and beliefs that have shaped the area since its inception. This church is a testament to the enduring spirit of faith, a place where generations have sought solace, spiritual guidance, and a sense of belonging.
