“Seven thousand families. Can you imagine that many people sharing a single church?” That’s Saint Clare’s Roman Catholic Church in Staten Island. A truly colossal parish. It’s the largest in the Archdiocese of New York. This isn’t just any church. Saint Clare’s has a history as rich and vibrant as the community it serves.

Founded on July 7 1918 it started as a mission. It was a small mission of St Patrick’s Church in Richmondtown. It was led by Father Charles J Parks. He and the Presentation Sisters established a religious education program. The church quickly grew. This was thanks to waves of Catholic immigrants. Many came from Ireland and Italy. Saint Clare’s became an independent parish on January 5 1925. The name honors Clare Parks a deceased family member of the founder.

The first church building was quite humble. It was a rented hall along Giffords Lane. It served the parish from 1918 to 1921. The hall even hosted church activities until 1953. The first proper church was dedicated October 30 1921. It was designed in a simple Colonial style. It was a remarkable achievement for its time. This wooden building was later moved. It’s now the charming weekday chapel.

Saint Clare’s has faced immense challenges. The 9/11 attacks tragically claimed 29 parishioners’ lives. An eternal flame now stands as a memorial. The church also helped extensively after Hurricane Sandy. The COVID-19 pandemic struck hard. It tragically claimed the lives of Father Richard J Guastella and Father Joseph P Murphy.

But the spirit of Saint Clare’s endures. Its six principal buildings are a testament to this. They span from 1921 to 1979. They include the magnificent church itself the school the convent the parish center a chapel and the rectory. These buildings surround a central parking lot. They’re nestled in a quiet neighborhood. The church itself is a stunning example of Colonial Revival architecture. Its octagonal shape and red brick exterior are iconic. The interior is bright and airy. It features stained-glass windows depicting the Life of Saint Clare.

Saint Clare’s isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a thriving community. It has a co-educational PreK-8 school. It also offers a vast array of ministries and programs. From religious education to community outreach Saint Clare’s is a vital part of Staten Island. The school has earned national recognition for its academic excellence. It’s also known for its innovative programs and community projects. It even participates in international technology tournaments.

So as you stand before Saint Clare’s Roman Catholic Church take a moment. Reflect on its rich history. Appreciate the resilience of its community. Understand that this is much more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith service and excellence. It’s a place where history faith and community intertwine.
